Seattle make-up artist Jara Mohlman is more than just a pretty face. She's fierce with a brush and can completely transform any face into a make-up masterpiece. She recently shared 5 favorite beauty secrets with us and as much as we understand the importance of keeping a secret sacred- we HAD to share the wealth with all of you!
Seattle Boutique Blogspot: Ok picture this scenario: You're stranded on a desert island. What's the one product you can't live without?
Jara: I get asked this question all the time and it is really tough to narrow it down to one thing. I’m a MAC addict so it would certainly be one of their products. I think it would have to be MAC Select Moisturecover Concealer. Just a dab under the eyes and around the nose can really brighten the face. But then again, my Viva Glam V Lipstick is also a must have. It is like “your own lips but better” for most skin tones.
Seattle Boutique Blogspot: We live a 24/7 lifestyle which means we need products that can do it all. What's your favorite multi-tasking product?
Seattle Boutique Blogspot: We live a 24/7 lifestyle which means we need products that can do it all. What's your favorite multi-tasking product?
Jara: Hands down, the MAC #109 Brush. I use this brush for applying liquid, cream or powder foundations, powder or cream blushes, highlighters, contouring and just for generally blending.
Seattle Boutique Blogspot: How often should I wash my make-up brushes and what's the best way to get them squeaky clean?
Jara: Again, the fact that I’m a MAC junkie is going to be very apparent here. There are actually many effective brush cleaners out there, but I use MAC Brush Cleaner. For my personal brushes I spot clean every few days and deep clean every couple of weeks. Spot cleaning is just pouring a bit of brush cleaner onto a tissue or paper towel and then gently wiping the brushes back and forth on it. To deep clean brushes, soak them in a solution of 2 part warm water and 1 part brush cleaner for about 20 minutes and then rinse them thoroughly, squeeze out any excess water and lay them flat with the hairs hanging off the edge of the surface. Professionally, I spot clean brushes between each client and deep clean them after every gig. Sometimes I will add a few drops of rubbing alcohol to the mix.
Seattle Boutique Blogspot: 4pm melt downs as SO inconvenient. What insider tips do you have to make my make-up last all day?
Jara: One of the most common problems I see as a makeup artist is people choosing a foundation because it is popular or their friends wear it rather than choosing the formula that suits their skin type. Make sure you ask your artist at the store if they have a foundation specifically formulated for oily, dry, combination, acne prone, sensitive, etc. skin.
Additional tips:
- Exfoliate once or twice a week. This will remove dead skin cells that can cause acne and blackheads. This enhances the appearance of the skin and allows for better absorption of face products.
-Moisturize! Even if your skin is oily. If your skin is oily use a lightweight moisturizer. There are moisturizers that have oil controlling properties as well like MAC’s Oil Control Lotion. If your skin is dry use a dense moisturizer like Crème De La Mer or MAC’s Studio Moisture Cream. Moisturizing preps skin for foundation just as using Gesso on a canvas preps it for painting. Foundation better adheres to hydrated skin.
-Primers. Using a primer not only can reduce redness and texture, but it can help the foundation on the skin and help it wear longer throughout the day. We call it a “gluestick” for foundation.
Using a brush to buff foundation in better adheres it to the skin. I use the #109 Brush for any foundation type, moving the brush in small circular motions.
-Set foundation with a powder. This will absorb any excess oils that cause foundation to fade or transfer. I highly recommend MAC’s Prep + Prime Transparent Finishing Powder for light to medium dark skin tones and Deep Dark Blot Powder for deeper skin tones.
Seattle Boutique Blogspot: What's the one product on the market that you are most excited about this-very-minute?
Jara: There is one thing that I love that is not MAC! Cover Girl Lash Blast Mascara is the bomb. It is perfect for short, straight lashes. It gives volume, length and curl.
As a makeup artist I absolutely love MAC Studio Sculpt Foundation (for normal to dry skin). It looks amazing in photo and video. I’m a huge fan of Paint Pots. These can be worn alone or underneath shadows to help prevent creasing. Also, if you have a light skin tone, they can also be used to cover up pesky discolourations on the rest of the face.
Right now I’m also obsessed with Viva Cyndi, Dare You, Deepest Wish Lipsticks, Satin Taupe, Swiss Chocolate and Brule Eye Shadows, Blacktrack Fluidline and Smolder Eye Kohl, Peachykeen and Dainty Blushes and My Scottish Fling Mineralize Kit.
